Bracing for a Silver Tsunami

The U.S. Army Chemical Material Activity (CMA) was a military organization supporting the Nation’s chemical demilitarization mission (ChemDemil). As CMA prepared to decommission, spikes in workforce retirement rates posed risks to capturing the organization’s highly specialized ChemDemil knowledge.

I led a consulting engagement with CMA to implement a Knowledge Management program that supported:

  1. Knowledge continuity amidst increases in retirement, organizational changes, and attrition

  2. Lessons Learned capture to support innovation and learning throughout the ChemDemil operations

  3. Technology and content management solutions for the organization’s Big Data and reporting needs

  4. Employee engagement and governance to promote ownership in knowledge management best practices.

Upon its decommissioning, CMA had knowledge-sharing processes and SharePoint-based content management tools to support capturing and sharing institutional knowledge and lessons learned. This made overall mission operations safer, more effective, and more efficient. Additionally, CMA maintained compliance with Army records retention schedules and regulations.
